412 Food Rescue’s mission is to prevent perfectly good food from entering the waste stream by redirecting it to those who are experiencing food insecurity.
In this episode of the My BFF Business Leader’s Podcast, we sit down with Leah Lizarondo, CEO of 412 Food Rescue. She discusses how she has been able to combine her passion for technology to drive one of America’s most innovative food recovery organizations forward.
To date 412 Food Rescue has prevented over 8 million pounds of food from going to waste via its technology that mobilizes over 8,000 drivers across five cities including: Cleveland, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Prince Williams County… and coming soon to Vancouver.
“We have set a goal of reaching 100 cities with our technology by 2030,” said Leah Lizarondo, CEO and Co-Founder of 412 Food Rescue. “I’m glad that I started this in Pittsburgh because so many of the ingredients for success are already in Pittsburgh,” added Lizarondo.
A native of the Philippines, Leah made her way to Pittsburgh by way of Carnegie Mellon University. She has dedicated her professional life to fighting hunger and promoting sustainability.
COVID-19 has changed the dynamic with regard to needs and volunteers. “The need is extremely high now, more than ever,” said Lizarondo. “Last month we had over 1,200 new volunteers register on our mobile app. We always want more people to join in the fight against hunger,” added Lizarondo. The only non-profit honored in the CES 2020 Innovation Awards’ “Tech for a Better World” category, Food Rescue Hero has saved more than 10 million pounds of food from going to landfills.
Recently, the organization attracted star power support from former Pittsburgh Pirate, Andrew McCutchen and Pittsburgh-native and film star Michael Keaton. The organization is always looking for new ways to drive awareness and support from the local communities.
